After a walkover in the 1st preliminary round of the FA Youth Cup, York faced Newton Aycliffe in their first match in this year's competition. Playing at home on Bootham Cresent, York started the game very brightly and put pressure on the Aycliffe defence from the off

The first chance of the match came when some good play from Reece Kelly down the right, produced a York corner. From the corner, George Foster-Vigors had a header tipped over the bar by the Aycliffe keeper. Shortly after, York thought they had opened the scoring, when Tom Owen put the ball away after the keeper could only parry a Charlie Binns shot. However the goal was dubiously ruled out for offside. A number of other good chances went begging for York, before they finally broke the deadlock. A long throw in from right back Arran Hudson fell nicely for Owen, and from twelve yards, he coolly slotted the ball past the keeper. The first half came to a close at 1 nil.

The second half started in much the same fashion, with York having all the play and chances. York doubled their lead on 49 minutes when a ricochet fell to Tom Platt inside the area, who slammed the ball into the back off the net. York's third goal came 10 minutes later. Rob Moncur beat the offside trap after a through ball by strike partner Owen. Moncur collected the ball and one on one with the keeper, he superbly tucked the ball away. York's Tom Allan then had a header hit the post after a great cross from Binns, and York made it four on 79 minutes. A clearing header from Foster-Vigors wasn't dealt with by the Aycliffe defence, the centre back collected the ball in his own area, but was robbed by Moncur. Now with just the keeper to beat,he placed the ball into the opposite corner from his first goal. The game was now way beyond Aycliffe and York just had time to make it five, when a great one-two between Owen and Moncur provided Owen the chance to slot home his second of the game.

Overall it was a good performance by York, and a comfortable start to what will hopefully be a long run in the competition. The Youth Team now face Pickering in the second qualifying round at Bootham Crescent on Wednesday 5th October.
