The Youth Team travelled to Prescot Cables looking for a win to progress into the first round proper of the FA Youth Cup. The Youth Team knew that they would be in for a tough game after Prescot emphatically beat Stockport 3 nil in the previous round. The game started at a fast pace with York dominating although Prescot looked dangerous on the break. At 23 minutes York opened the scoring, when a cross/shot from the left by York’s Reece Kelly was not dealt with by the Prescot keeper. Without anyone making contact with the ball, it nestled in the far right of the goal. After the goal, the game continued in much the same fashion, with both sides playing some nice football. The game was very much in the balance, when just before half time, Prescot won a free kick just inside the York half. A pin point ball into the box was superbly headed in by the Prescot centre back, and they were back in the game at the break.
The second half started similarly with both sides creating chances, Kelly again cut in from the left and had a shot parried by the keeper, but no one in red could follow up before the keeper gathered at the second opportunity. The decisive moment in the match was when a two footed lunge by a Prescot player, resulted in a red card for the attacker. After the red card, York started to dominate the game and their pressure told on 85 minutes when Tom Allan fired in a low cross from the left. The cross was spilled by the Prescot keeper, and striker Rob Moncur was on hand to fire home. York then kept the ball well in the closing stages, and there was just time for Danny Middleton to add a third in stoppage time. The midfielder picked up the ball, ran it past two Prescot defenders and fired home to the keeper’s bottom right corner. It was a superb individual goal to cap off a good performance and a great result for the Youth Team.
They will now host Macclesfield Town in the first round proper at Bootham Crescent on Wednesday the 2nd of November.
