The Youth Team came into the match against Scunthorpe full of confidence on the back of five straight wins. Like many previous games this season, York started the game very well and were in the ascendency straight away. Scunthorpe were finding hard to get out of their own half, and their only outlet was the long ball downfield. York made a number of chances in the first half, and should have been comfortably in front at the break. However they could not take advantage of their dominance.
The second half began in the same manner, but more chances were now being created by both sides, and against the run of play Scunthorpe opened the scoring midway through the second half. A cross from the right, was headed in at the near post by the striker. York continued to press for the equaliser, Charlie Binns having a volley go just over the bar, and Tom Allan the hit the woodwork with a powerful header. York then thought they had equalised, when the ball appeared to creep over the line, but the referee was not interested in the players’ appeals. Despite York’s continued effort to get back on levels terms and gain something from the game, Scunthorpe defended well throughout the game, and York were unable to break them down.
